RE: Considering 22 GQ Arctic Fox Travel Trailer

We have the GMC diesel and were getting 16 mpg with our little Sunline QUE. When we upgraded to our 28' Sunline, which is still rather low profile, but weighs 5000# we dropped to 13.3 mpg. (highway) Nontowing we get 20 on the highway. We love the extra space.

RE: Planning a trip to Amish Country next year help

I'd go late Sept. or early Oct. With kids under 5 I'd stay at Old Mill Stream. It's pretty crowded on weekends, but you have the luxury of reserving a good site now. We request a site along the stream because our door faces the stream and an Amish farm instead of the back of someone's RV. From this campground you can walk to Dutch Wonderland, home for lunch and naps, then back - it's great. Dutch Wonderland is only open on weekends after Labor Day, and day time hours end Oct. 13 this year. It's a wonderful park for that age child. I'd also recommend Strasburg RR and the RR museum. Shady Maple kind of sets the standard for buffets in Lancaster County. It's huge and the food is decent. BUT, for the best desserts (and it's cheaper) I LOVE Diener's. Only open for dinner on friday until 8:00. Every other night they close at 6:00. It's on Rt. 30 east of the outlets, on the left, next to the yellow windmill. Pick up a Lancaster County GUide with the map in the center, and just drive around the backroads. If you want to see buggies galore, take that drive around 1:00 on a Sunday when church lets out.

RE: Front or rear bed?

We like the rear bedroom away from the road. We have a big picture window on the side by the dinette that usually has a good view, because most campsites are angled. Plus I like to see what's going on in the campground out the front window...sometimes it's very entertaining!

RE: Heating with no Electricity??????

We just got back from 3 nights at Big Meadows and it's cold there at night already. We bought an extra 12V battery before we went. Ran a cycle of the furnace heat right before we went to bed. Whoever got up to potty in the middle of the night cycled the heat one time again. Then we ran a cycle in the morning. After that we used a Mr.Heater propane heater. The instructions on Mr Heater clearly say not to run it while you sleep. We don't have a generator, so really needed to conserve.

RE: SMALL TT FOR MY FOLKS

I agree that if money is no issue the Big Foot has some really nice choices. Otherwise the Sunline 1950 or 2363 are nice units. You'd have to find used ones though since they stopped making them in 2007.

RE: TT suitable for full timing?

Well...we're gonna start in our Sunline (eventually), and know someone else who's fulltiming in one. We like trailers so have done some research on this topic. IF/WHEN we become convinced that we will fulltime for years we'll be looking at either Arctic Fox or BigFoot. The construction looks great and we like the home like feel of the interiors (unless the SUnline is serving us well)We studied the Airstream but concluded that the outside storage just isn't there.

RE: State Park or Nice Campground In Central or Western Virginia

Grayson Highlands State Park is one of my favorite places in Virginia :) There's just so much beautiful hiking, and the Virginia Creeper is nearby. It IS hard to recommend a campground though without knowing what you like to do. Grayson is really remote; no cell service; and not alot to do that isn't related to nature.

RE: Earlysville, VA camping (Charlottsville)

Ditto what Jim said...there really is nothing too close to Earlysville. If you have to drive to Earlysville repeatedly - as in visiting family - it would probably be easier access for you by staying north on 29 at either Heavenly Acres or Shenandoah Hills.

We gave up on the plexiglass, which got foggy from scratches very quickly. Our dog won't even jump up on this.

RE: looking for other small travel trailer owners

For me the secret to backing is to go really really slowly and stick my head out the window to watch the back of the trailer. If it's not going the direction I want, I just turn the wheel the opposite way. If I try to THINK about what I'm doing I get all messed up! :)

RE: Has anyone ever attended the RV Show in Hersey, PA?

If you only have 1 day at this show you really need a plan. There's no way to see everything in a day. You might be able to see a majority of the TT in a day, but then they all start to look the same. Take notes if you're seriously thinking about buying. We always pack a lunch and go relax in the gazebos in the parking lot at lunch time. The food they sell is WAY overpriced, and not very good. Hershey Highmeadow is the closest campground by far, unless you want to boondock in the Hershey parking lot.

RE: Charlottesville,VA T.Jefferson Home

Daughter lives in C'ville and we always stay at the KOA. It's very close to Monticello. I think the pull throughs are pretty close together, so we usually get a site on the outside loop. (I like site 9 if you fit) We've stayed at Misty Mountain as well, but very much prefer the KOA.

RE: French Creek State Park (PA) Campsites??

Hopewell Furnace Historic site doesn't have to be "open" for you to enjoy walking around the grounds. You wouldn't be able to see the visitor center or view the 10 minute intro film, but it's still an interesting place to walk around. Look for the push button talking thingies near the furnace area.
My guess is it's 45 minutes or less to Valley Forge.

RE: Sale of primary residence, fulltiming and IRS issue

I guess I'm thinking that when you sell depends on a couple of things.
How committed you are to fulltiming. In other words, is there a possibility that you may want to actually move back into this house after a couple years of travel?
Ask yourself if you really need the potential extra money you gain by renting. It sounds like the market is on an upswing in your area, but it's not guaranteed. If you can estimate the amount of money gained by waiting, then you can determine if that's a significant amount for your particular situation.
If you want to deal with renters. I know we're done with that. We owned a beach house which we rented out by the season. (no weekly rentals) The renters were supposedly screened, and there were still problems. They broke things...things needed repair...the hot water heater died...They had ants...etc.
I sure wouldn't put it on the market until the police warning signs are gone. I'd think that would also effect your rental clientelle as well.
Good luck with your decision :)
